A massive 25% drop was observed in terms of USD traded between Q1 and Q2 2022 with a global volume of about US$8 billion in Q2 2022.

A net profit of US$460M is recorded over Q2 2022, a significant decrease compared to Q1 2022 (US$2.3B).

Secondary market remains predominant with almost 80% of the volume of USD traded, in the meantime, primary market has constantly decreased over the period.

A 46% decrease in profit at resell is observed during the period, for a total loss that increased by 23% (US$1.8 billion profit for US$1.4 billion loss).

The market is more centralized than ever: More than 30% of the volume of USD traded over the quarter is distributed between projects that have been launched or acquired by Yuga Labs.

The general public seems to be losing interest in NFTs, if the search volume on Google is to be believed.
Collectibles are the predominant segment in the industry, far ahead of Art or even the Metaverses.

The resale profit volume is down 3% while the total loss volume is up nearly 50% compared to the previous quarter.
For the first time, some segments show a negative balance: Gaming shows a total loss of almost $50 million on the segment, which makes it the least profitable segment of the industry from a trading point of view.

With nearly $8 billion traded in the first quarter of 2022, the market cannot really be considered to have collapsed. We are seeing more of a form of stabilization, in line with the last quarter of 2021.
Conversely, the volume of sales fell by nearly 50%, with a very marked slowdown in the volume of buyers and sellers.

<p>Last year, the Non Fungible Conference was a forerunner regarding the place of digital art in an NFT event. Entire rooms and floors had been set aside to exhibit digital artworks.</p>

<h2>Q3 2022 NFT Market Performance: Building the Web3 Industry Despite Low Volumes.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The most notable indicator of global NFT statistics is that of the USD traded volume. Compared to the second quarter, it fell 77% to US$1.6 billion traded on the market from US$7.3 billion in Q2 2022.</p>



<p>It is interesting, however, that other equally important indicators have not fallen as much. For example, the number of sales fell very little (-5%) as well as that of active wallets (-17%). With respectively a volume of US$10.9 million in sales and US$1.1 million in wallets, activity is still significant during this quarter.</p>



<p>Another important element: the number of smart contracts also continued to increase by 9% to more than 17K showing that initiatives continue to be launched by project creators.</p>



<h2>The NFT Market is Reshaping and Becoming Less Centralized</h2>

<p>During this third quarter, one of the biggest changes was the reconstitution of the market. For example, Yuga Labs&#8217; collections (<a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/boredapeclub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bored Apes Yacht Club</a>, <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/cryptopunks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CryptoPunks</a>, <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/otherside" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Otherside</a> and <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/meebits" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Meebits</a>) accounted for just over 30% in Q2. For this Q3, they represented 17% of the USD volume traded.</p>



<p>Despite a bearish market, we observe a change in the actors entering the NFT industry with well-established brands (Tiffany, Starbucks, Microsoft, MTV, the city of Shanghai, Ticketmaster) from all horizons launching NFT initiatives, confirming that the NFT market is quietly and slowly reaching a mainstream audience.</p>



<p>The market has therefore reshaped itself by leaving more room for other Collectibles type projects such as <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/doodles" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Doodles</a>, <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/moonbirds" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Moonbirds</a> or <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/nouns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nouns</a> but also the art and utility segments have made a breakthrough in the top 5 projects that generated the most USD traded volume. On one hand, <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/artblocks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Art Blocks</a> has again aroused interest but on the other hand, a strong euphoria has also manifested itself around <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/ethereumnameservice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ethereum Name Service</a>.</p>



<p>Several categories began to form, mainly with ENS names consisting of 3 to 4 digits.</p>



<h2>NFT Collectibles Are Still Dominant, Art and Utilities Are Getting Stronger&nbsp;</h2>

<p>With over US$537 million in trading volume for the third quarter of 2022, the collectible segment represents 60% of the market share. With a 52% drop in active wallets, this means wallets that have collected Collectible NFTs have preferred to keep their NFT rather than sell it at a loss.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, the Art (14%) and Utilities (13%) segments experienced the most volume during this quarter. Only the Utility segment is standing out and showing a promising future with a volume of assets increasing (+44%) and liquidity accelerating (+5%)</p>

<p><em>Active Wallets: Number of wallets that bought or sold at least one NFT during the period. The number of active wallets allows you to have an estimate of the activity that took place on-chain (buying, selling, interacting with a smart contract) but it is important to keep in mind that a user can have several wallets. To find out the number of off-chain users, we recommend you ask project creators to share their statistics.</em></p>



<p>Looking at active wallets, the distribution of on-chain activity is much more diverse than the USD traded volume. The segment with the least active wallets is the Metaverse with a bit more than 17K wallets (-74% compared to Q2). That said, it is also the segment that has seen its average ownership increase by 375%.</p>



<p>This trend is not only related to the metaverse segment, we also find it in art, collectibles, gaming and utilities. NFT collectors are fewer in number but keep their assets longer. Perhaps a longer investment perspective?</p>



<h2>‘This New Generation of NFTs Will Either Be Useful or Won’t Be..’</h2>



<p>This quote from our co-founder Gauthier Zuppinger concludes the state of the NFT market for this third quarter of 2022. Indeed, the main expectation of buyers today is to find a real utility before investing. Collections with no real potential created last year are no longer traded and investments in new collections are more cautious.</p>

<p>We featured <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/corporate/nft-in-europe-a-motion-design-and-nft-exhibition" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT in and Motion Plus Design in an article on Friday</a> and we went there on Saturday to see what an event where art occupied the main square looked like.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>NFT, Art and Artists Stories..</h2>



<p>The program was clear: the day was going to be about art!&nbsp; More specifically, the history of the artists attending the event and how they discovered and utilized NFTs in their creative practice. This event was something rare enough to be highlighted and to be honest, the change felt good!</p>



<p>At the entrance, there were no swag bags, no sponsor booths, the atmosphere was sober and cozy. In the main hall, works by the artist-speakers were displayed on screens. A professional photographer was waiting for those who wanted a souvenir photo in the colors of the event.</p>



<p>We were quickly invited to take a seat as the <a href="https://nft-in.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT in conference</a> began. It was 10am and the opening was made by Kook Ewo, CEO of <a href="https://motion-plus-design.com/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motion Plus Design</a> with a presentation of past events and above all, an announcement about an art center in Paris centered around Motion Design.</p>



<p>Next it was the turn of the artists presented by Colborn Bell, Founder of the <a href="https://app.museumofcryptoart.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Museum Of Crypto Art</a>. Each artist had 15 minutes to share their story and their journey, the stories were as captivating as they were exciting and here are some of them:</p>



<h2>Sofia Crespo: Natural History, AI and NFTs</h2>

<p>As a child, <a href="https://twitter.com/soficrespo91">Sof</a><a href="https://twitter.com/soficrespo91" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ia Crespo</a> was offered a microscope. This allowed her to become aware of a whole universe that existed beyond the perception of our eyes. While pursuing her studies, Sofia mixes plants or insects with generative art techniques&#8230; and <a href="https://unitlondon.com/exhibitions/in-our-code-group-exhibition/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">she hears about NFTs during 2020</a>.</p>



<h2>Obvious: Art Collective Using Artificial Intelligence</h2>

<p>With their <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/superrare/SUPR/133" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first NFT sold in July 2018</a>, we can qualify the <a href="https://twitter.com/obv_ious" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Obvious</a> collective as OG in the NFT ecosystem. Working with artificial intelligence, Obvious presented us with some of their work created from hundreds of hours of research to find the perfect combination.</p>



<h2>Braw Haus: Elevating Digital Artist</h2>

<p>Another talk that stood out to us was that of Patricia Gloum, co-founder with Justin Vilgrain of<a href="https://twitter.com/BrawHaus" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Braw Haus</a>. Created in 2018, Braw Haus aims to highlight digital artists in the real and virtual world. During her performance, she showed us the video projection on an UNESCO World Heritage monument in Iraq.</p>



<h2>Emi Kusano: NFT Japan Culture</h2>

<p>Here again, an atypical and exciting artistic journey. After a short stint in fashion, <a href="https://twitter.com/emikusano" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Emi Kusano</a> devoted himself to music with his band Satellite Young. But the lockdowns forced her to stop and she became interested in NFTs. Her first drop on Foundation sold quickly but the adventure did not stop there: she then went on to mint the drawings of her child to create the <a href="https://twitter.com/ZombieZooArt" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Zombie Zoo</a> collection. This was an unexpected success, today the Toei Animation will make an anime (japanese animation).</p>



<h2>The NFT Art Space is Alive and Well</h2>



<p>What we take away from this intimate conference is very positive for the future of artists who use NFTs as a medium. NFTs changed the lives of these digital artists and today they travel the world to share their experiences.</p>



<p>Having a focus only on the artists, their work and their journey, while having time to talk with them at breaks really felt good. Even if currently the market indicators are not very cheerful, the motivation and passion that emerges from this event makes us very optimistic for the future!</p>

<h2>What is the ‘NFT in’ Europe Event?</h2>



<p>After seeing more and more interest in NFTs during 2021, the idea of creating an event with the same philosophy took shape and Motion Plus Design organized its first<a href="https://nft-in.com/america" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> NFT in America</a> event&nbsp; in Los Angeles. After this success, the appointment was given in Paris, at the Théâtre du Gymnase on September 17th.</p>



<p>For its first time in Europe, ‘NFT in’ will welcome on stage the <a href="https://nft-in.com/europe/speakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greatest NFT artists</a> who will present their most beautiful works and their creative process. Twelve of the world&#8217;s most influential international artists will align for a day of unique conferences celebrating the artistic, cultural and technological innovations of the NFT sphere.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Who are you?</h2>



<p>Who am I&#8230;? Good question, I am first and foremost an entrepreneur. I like to create things without really knowing how to monetize them, but I like to create them. I began a startup 12 years ago called Food Reporter, then I created <a href="https://www.hackathon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bemyapp</a> (also known as <a href="https://www.hackathon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hackathon.com</a>). It developed well, we had around a hundred customers such as Facebook, Intel, HP and others and we organized events in more than 50 countries.</p>



<p>I discovered crypto and blockchain a few years ago. We organized some events around blockchain but I wasn&#8217;t too into it. I bought Eth back then but didn&#8217;t really believe in it, then I discovered NFTs two years ago, and I took a slap! I bought a plot of land in Sandbox to organize events in the metaverse because I thought it was funny&#8230; and then I dug in and fell in love with the NFT &#8220;art&#8221; movement. I was lucky enough to witness the birth of a movement and I started collecting like crazy.</p>



<p>With my colleague Remi, we <a href="https://www.nftmorning.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">created a live show on Clubhouse</a> to invite artists and entrepreneurs on a daily basis a week or two before the Beeple Hype. Basically, it was to explain the NFTs to Remi and it became a daily&#8230; and we did about 250 podcasts. In parallel we wrote a book and other things, always with the aim of democratizing NFTs.</p>



<p>To come back to the question, I would say that my goal is to federate. We organized meetups, small events and we embarked on the NFT Factory, always with the objective of bringing more and more people into NFTs and that the people who are in it can see each other.</p>



<h2>How did you come up with the idea for the Non Fungible Conference?</h2>



<p>It&#8217;s really the fusion of my two passions: NFTs on the one hand and events on the other. I was into NFTs and I participated in a lot of events around the world but I think I needed to make my interpretation of this world, to share my vision of NFTs. Because there were mostly Bitcoin or DeFi events&#8230; which is cool, but it&#8217;s not the same audience, the same passion.&nbsp; When I said I was in the NFTs, I was told &#8220;oh yeah it&#8217;s good it&#8217;s booming&#8221;. And for me I thought there was a problem. There are many events where I have noticed that most of the speakers have never minted any NFTs. That&#8217;s how I wanted to make a European event for people who know NFTs.</p>



<p>This is perhaps a somewhat radical positioning because I did not want to discover NFTs but to go to the level above. With a clear spirit to put art and artists at the heart of the processes. In 2021 we saw a lot of evolution, the big brands have put themselves on it, there are metaverses in all directions&#8230;but before the &#8220;industry&#8221; side, it&#8217;s really about putting artists at the center.</p>



<p>There are awesome metaverse projects, awesome PFP projects but for this event, it was putting art at the center of attention. Last October, I set up a small team to be able to set up the Non Fungible Conference in Lisbon a few months later.</p>



<h2>What is the biggest barrier for the mass adoption of NFTs?</h2>



<p>Honestly? There is no barrier anymore, we could talk about a technical barrier perhaps, but the main barrier today is psychological. To answer this problem of psychological barriers today and have mass adoption, a normal person might hear about it once, twice, four times &#8230; and is interested in it. Everyone, when they hear about NFTs today, thinks &#8220;it&#8217;s still weird to buy JPEGs&#8221;. Everyone went through this phase.</p>



<p>Depending on your mentality, your aversion to innovation or the trend of the world it will take more or less time for you to take an interest in it. So for me the only barrier is a time barrier.&nbsp; The only question is the faster we communicate and communicate strongly, the closer we get to this snowball effect that will allow mass adoption.</p>



<h2>How do you see NFTs in 5 years?</h2>



<p>In 5 years I think we will use the title &#8220;NFT&#8221; less. In 5 years, in the same way as the internet which is everywhere, NFTs will be everywhere. Today we use a smartphone, we use a TV, a computer, a whole series of things that depend on the internet without asking ourselves the question of whether the internet is there or not. To take an older example, it&#8217;s like electricity..</p>



<p>For me we are at that point. These are underlying technologies that make it possible to do a lot of things. You&#8217;re going to play video games, you won&#8217;t realize you&#8217;re activating, using or earning NFTs. You&#8217;re going to buy skins like that kind of thing you won&#8217;t realize that you&#8217;re going to buy goods like works of art&#8230; and during the transaction you will not realize that you are using an NFT when buying. I don&#8217;t know if it will be in 5, 7 or 10 years but we are moving towards a society where we might talk less about ‘NFTs’ but they will be just everywhere.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Let&#8217;s go back to the NFT Factory, what are its objectives?</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://nftfactoryparis.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT Factory</a> is anchored in this evangelization process. When I wrote the book ‘NFT Revolution’, it was so that my father could use NFTs. The NFT Factory follows this same logic, from the outside you see an art gallery and then behind this very accessible and very simple to understand thing there is this NFT movement. The goal is that you can come in and get going with your first with very little training, a little onboarding and an understanding of what an NFT is. The goal is really to have a team of about fifty people to have a maximum referent of this universe.</p>



<p>The starting point is that we do not realize how far ahead France and even Europe is on this subject. Sandbox is one of the world leaders in the metaverse. Sorare in entertainment, Ledger in security, other companies that are not yet known, artists who are already known worldwide such as Pascal Boyart, Obvious, Allota Money&#8230; In the DeFi there are monsters that are French too.</p>



<p>If you project yourself in 5 years precisely, this kind of box will succeed GAFA. If you look at the history of GAFA, these boxes have HP and IBM who were the leaders in computing. And in my opinion, there are new leaders who will surpass the old leaders. It&#8217;s boxes, if you want them to work, the whole continent must wake up. Maybe it goes through politicians, maybe through journalists, but it goes mainly through people.</p>



<p>If tomorrow in France there are 40M wallets, which buy and exchange NFTs and well behind there is a market that journalists and politicians will follow. The goal is to start at the grassroots and take people from the bottom up to the NFTs. The more collectors, consumers, sensitized people, the more you will accelerate the snowball effect and welcome people into the ecosystem.</p>

<h2>Q2 Global NFT Performance</h2>

<p>Most indicators are down in the second quarter of 2022, without much surprise given the global economic context. The main metrics are down about 25%, which is a relatively modest decline compared to cryptocurrency trends.</p>



<p>Note that also the average price of NFTs experienced a very slight drop of only 6% while crypto currencies were almost divided by 3 during the period.</p>



<h2>NFT Trading: A 25% USD Traded Drop</h2>



<p>Let’s start with the USD traded volume. The NFT market has seen a massive drop of about 25% in terms of USD traded between Q1 and Q2 2022 with a global volume of about US$8 billion in Q2 2022.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s not just the USD volume traded that has fallen. This is also the case for the number of buyers and sellers as well as the number of sales. These decreases come mainly from collectibles that have lost interest since the beginning of the year except for the &#8220;blue chip&#8221; collections.</p>



<p><a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/cryptopunks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CryptoPunks</a>, <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/meebits" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Meebits</a> and the <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/boredapeclub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bored Ape Yacht Club</a> family alone account for 30% of the USD volume traded in the global NFT market. It would therefore seem that a centralization of the market is taking place around the projects owned by Yuga Labs for this first quarter of 2022.</p>



<h2>Q2 NFT Trading Profit &amp; Loss</h2>



<p>With the fall in the price of crypto and the decline in NFT market volumes, making profits has become harder during the second quarter of 2022. Profit at resell decreased by 46% during the period, for a total loss that increased by 23% (US$1.8 billion profit for US$1.4 billion loss).</p>



<p>NFT trading records a net profit of US$460M over Q2 2022, a significant decrease compared to Q1 2022 (US$2,347M).&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Collectibles segment is paradoxically the one with the highest resale loss rate, peaking at more than $100 million per week, but which at the same time still has the most profitable sales of the quarter.</p>



<h2>Less Liquidity and More Building</h2>

<p>Very few new NFTs have been issued this quarter, with a global supply growth of only 4%. The liquidity has also considerably diminished over all segments. Secondary market remains predominant with almost 80% of the volume of USD traded, in the meantime, Primary market has constantly decreased over the period.</p>



<p>It is mainly around the <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/ethereumnameservice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ethereum Name Service</a> (ENS) that the volume has been in the Utilities sector. The decentralized domain name project has announced new updates for its product. But we have also seen a lot of speculation around three-character names.</p>



<p>Driven by <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/otherside" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OtherSide</a> and the continuity of the hype launched by Meta at the end of last year, metaverse projects also seem to be multiplying.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Only utility NFTs and metaverses are showing growing liquidity despite a bear market.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>NFTs Are Not Buried Yet</h2>



<p>The least we can say is that the market has changed dramatically in just one quarter. NFTs are no longer in the spotlight, the turmoil seems to have died down…for now. Let’s take this opportunity to refocus on what really brings value over time.</p>



<p>Profit is made during Bull Markets, but it is usually during the Bear Markets where real value is built.</p>

<p>Bear market, build market, maybe both. This year’s NFT.NYC happened shortly after a severe downturn in the crypto and stock markets that had the mainstream media questioning and in some cases claiming that NFTs were dead. This is not the case, and NFT.NYC was proof positive that the NFT market is going to continue to build, grow, and improve.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>The largest NFT.NYC to date</h2>



<p>This was the largest <a href="https://www.nft.nyc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT.NYC</a> yet, and it came less than a year after the close of 2021’s conference (in November 2021). Over 15,000 attendees, 1,500 speakers, and 9 venues spread around Times Square and its neighboring blocks. There were 20+ categories for the three days of talks and events focusing on Art, Film, Music, DAOs, Fashion, Brands, and Sports to name a few. A common thread for the talks was building. Brands (Coach, Squarespace, Estée Lauder, The Philadelphia Eagles…) were sharing their experience and ideas on entering the NFT market, and how these ideas can grow and develop over the coming years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>PFP projects discussed adding value to their community through Metaverse activations and collection-specific gaming. And the digital billboards of Times Square were inundated with graphics and videos featuring new and existing projects, artists, collections, and platforms.</p>



<p>These were all positive signs that although we might be in the middle of a bear market, artists, musicians, developers, thought leaders, and global powerhouse brands were continuing to explore next steps in the NFT industry.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>The long and hard way to the NFT conferences</h2>



<p>While large numbers can be impressive for headlines, they can be a logistical nightmare for a conference. If <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/corporate/our-report-about-nftnyc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2021’s NFT.NYC was difficult to navigate</a> and decide which events and talks one might attend, this year was near impossible. Everyone would have to pick and choose who they would see, and in doing so, decide who they would miss out on.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Marriot Marquis was a very impressive setup and location for the event with the 2nd through 9th floor allocated to NFTNYC operations; booths, lounges, exhibitions, dining, and multiple stages for speakers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then there were side events in addition to all the official conference events! Art shows, after parties, musical performances, and even a secret party at a secret location whose coordinates were only provided to those who were brilliant enough to crack a code and solve a puzzle.</p>

<h2>Spike Lee on stage at NFT.NYC</h2>



<p>One very notable venue and speaker at this year’s conference was Radio City Music Hall, and the one and only Spike Lee.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Granted, there was some small conversation about New York baseball (see the outfit), but there was also a great conversation on intellectual property, ownership, and drive /&nbsp; grit versus talent. Spike Lee made it clear that there are plenty of talented people in the world, but the ones that stand out are those who “&#8230;put in the work, learn their craft, and do it!”&nbsp;</p>



<p>He saw how NFTs were a new medium and tool to be used for creatives and those looking to get into film. The ability to self fund a film with an NFT collection really stood out, as he stated that funding is one of the most difficult things to accomplish when starting out as a filmmaker.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As an added bonus Spike Lee also shared a wonderful story about his memories from his first NY Knicks game at Madison Square Garden.</p>

<h2>NFTs are not dead</h2>



<p>NFTs are not dead, there are many brands and artists who haven’t even begun thinking about how they can utilize this new medium and capabilities for their products and creations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Maybe it’s a good thing that the hype has slowed, that the over speculative nature of flippers and money markets have cooled down? There are certainly many opportunities to be had in Web3 and from the looks of things we will continue to grow, build, and improve.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Bear market? Build market?</p>



<p>Both.</p>

We went to the 4th edition of the NFT.NYC which took place in New York from June 20 to 23, 2022. Here are our impressions of the biggest NFT.NYC to date!

<h2>Shaban Shaame, Crypto OG</h2>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: Hello Shaban and thank you for your time! As part of our series on the key players in the ecosystem, I wanted to ask you a few questions. Let&#8217;s start with the first one, can you introduce yourself?</p>



<p><strong>Shaban</strong>: I am the founder of EverdreamSoft and producer of The Spell of Genesis game. Today, I focus on NFTs on different blockchains. For example, with Spell of Genesis, NFTs exist on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Klaytn. The idea is to leave it up to the user to choose the blockchain where they want to mint their NFTs.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>In 2014, what drove you to get into NFTs?</h2>



<p><strong>Shaban</strong>: In 2012, I heard about Bitcoin with the MtGox flaw and a few articles speaking about Bitcoin going from $50 to $100, then another that said Bitcoin had gone from $100 to $200..I had to get some! Then I really started to take an interest in what was behind it all and I still haven&#8217;t lost interest in it today.</p>



<p>There was some research that caught my attention, it was the Colored Coin. Take a small fraction of Bitcoin and say that it is something else like another currency or an object. The idea of using Blockchain no longer as a currency but rather as an indicator for something else was fascinating!&nbsp;</p>



<p>Then Counterparty came out that solved a problem which existed with Colored Coin. On Colored Coin, if we ever sent an asset to an incompatible address, the data was lost. With Counterparty, this problem was solved. Even with an incompatible one, you didn&#8217;t lose your metadata. At that time, we had a game at Everdreamsoft called Moonga, a collectible card game like Hearthstone.</p>



<p>Players would exchange in-game cards using Paypal then they would try to revert the transaction by contacting the support. This way, they could keep the cards and the money&#8230; </p>



<p>That&#8217;s when we said to ourselves &#8220;what if we emulated the card game directly on-chain?&#8221;. In this way the user is the only master on board and he is solely responsible for the exchange of his cards.</p>



<h2>At that time, were there any technical limitations to using NFTs on Counterparty?</h2>



<p><strong>Shaban</strong>: Not really. The idea was to put metadata on a currency. The transaction fees were very low and it was quite positive. It wasn&#8217;t really a technical limitation, rather an access limitation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The players who were already following us have not managed to take the crypto train, find Bitcoins, buy Bitcoins, create a wallet&#8230; and the idea of value that the card was going to exist on-chain, <em>ad vitam eternam</em> was not well understood.</p>



<h2>What do you think of the NFT ecosystem today?</h2>



<p><strong>Shaban</strong>: The bet I took in 2015 was that this trend would remain. The strategy I decided to follow was to continue the development of Spell of Genesis. But I also knew that other companies were going to develop their game. So rather than trying to compete with Ubisoft for example, we also started to develop tools for companies.</p>



<p>This is the natural evolution of this bet, I am happy that it evolves but I did not doubt it, on the other hand I am quite surprised at the speed at which it accelerated. It was quite flat and then all of a sudden an explosion of interest so it looks a bit like a bubble rise phenomenon. A bit like in 2017 with ICOs, then it corrected a lot, people said &#8220;it&#8217;s dead&#8230;&#8221; but this is the time when projects and technology are being built in the background.</p>



<p>There is a lot of opportunism but at some point it will correct itself and what will remain are the strong fundamentals. At the moment we are still in a euphoria bubble stage that will correct but we are still at the very beginning.</p>



<h2>How do you see NFTs in the next 5 years?</h2>



<p><strong>Shaban</strong>: At the moment it&#8217;s a bit of a wild west and I think there will soon be a whistle signaling the end of the playground. Right now there are a lot of scams, copyright infringements, a whole bunch of things that are induced by the link between the asset and the token. The tokens are managed by the smart contract but the problem lies in the underlying asset.</p>



<p>For example, I can create the same asset on different blockchains. The token will be unique but not the asset. In relation to this issue, we are working on a decentralized certification authority.</p>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: It&#8217;s ambitious.</p>



<p><strong>Shaban</strong>: It&#8217;s ambitious, yes! It is a Blockchain to certify NFTs on any Blockchain. We must find a way to form a consensus that can determine whether a particular NFT is a true or a false one. The problem with a centralized platform is that it won&#8217;t be able to track everything that happens. It has to be decentralized, we can&#8217;t trust only one entity to say &#8220;this is a real one&#8221; or &#8220;this is a fake&#8221;.</p>



<h2>What is the biggest barrier to mainstream adoption of NFTs?</h2>



<p><strong>Shaban</strong>: One of the barriers to mainstream adoption is the number of scams. This is an important issue because it is a matter of trust. An informed user will be able to look at the smart contract and identify if the author is the right one, if the function called is the right one&#8230; For an average user, it is beyond his abilities. It is even dangerous for him to come into this ecosystem, for example on Opensea there are a lot of fakes and it can be very easy to lose money by buying one.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s better that ordinary users are not yet there in the ecosystem because the more they arrive, the more they get scammed and the more there is a form of negative vision about NFTs. We see it in the world of video games with Ubisoft when they announced their NFT&#8230; There has been a huge amount of hate from users.</p>



<p>Why? Because they think it&#8217;s a dark world full of liars and thieves&#8230; But from this outside perspective, when they see their favorite studio enter the NFT, they tell themselves that it has moved to the dark side of the force, only to make more money.</p>



<p>While it&#8217;s not that at all, it&#8217;s much bigger than that, they want to be part of the ongoing revolution.</p>



<h2><strong>Conclusion</strong></h2>



<p>There is little doubt that the world of NFTs will continue to astonish newcomers for some time ahead but having the ability to hear from a true NFT OG puts into perspective the recent hype and shows us how far we have traveled, bringing a vision of the future to come..</p>

<h2>Jæn, Crypto Artist and Art Director</h2>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: Hello Jæn and thank you for your time! As part of <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/corporate/nft-heroes-07-paul-fxhash" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our series on the key players in the ecosystem</a>, I wanted to ask you a few questions, firstly let me ask you to introduce yourself.</p>



<p><strong>Jæn</strong>: I started my artistic career in traditional, physical art, 3D printed street art and augmented reality. I also made a lot of commercial illustrations with clients like Disney, Diesel and PayPal. I had been playing with digital for a while, and I felt that you shouldn&#8217;t necessarily wait until you have a physical justification to create a digital work.</p>



<p>In 2020, when I discovered NFTs it answered all the questions I was asking myself. No need to have a physical medium to enhance digital art. It already works, there is a lively culture.. I switched to full-time at the end of 2020 without hesitation.</p>



<h2>Do you have a project right now?</h2>



<p><strong>Jæn</strong>: Yes! It&#8217;s called The Big Dream, with a collective named Dreame. We managed to form a team of more than 60 artists from all over the planet and above all, with more than 50% women! Parity is something that is very important for this project.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We collect dreams from all over the world. The concept is very simple: just go to <a href="https://big.drea.me" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">big.drea.me</a> and give your vision of the world in 2030. How would you dream of the world in 2030?</p>



<p>We collected thousands of dreams from all over the world and then the artists drew from this database and illustrated it. It&#8217;s really quite a moving and special experience, it feels like you&#8217;re digging into the subconscious of humanity.</p>



<p>Among these artworks, we made 500 that we then merged to make a single large one. This set has already been exhibited all around the world: Time Square, Shibuya, Spain, London&#8230; And we want to continue to go around the world to continue to bring people and their dreams closer together through this artistic project!</p>

<p>This big patchwork new work was sold as an <a href="https://niftygateway.com/marketplace/collection/0x7a40dceff3693d6274a17bc11b00ab1afaa8a581" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">open edition on Nifty Gateway</a>. And this collage was also sent to the International Space Station to be exhibited inside, the first crypto art to do so!</p>



<p>There will also be an auction of a unique edition that will allow the collector to choose from the 500 works in order to make it a &#8220;curated collection&#8221;. A third of the profits generated by the sales of this new collection would be donated to the artist selected by the collector, a third to whole collection, and therefore a third to the Collector-Curator. That’s the current plan.</p>



<p>15% of the sales will be donated to charities in total, 10% of which will be managed by the collectors of the 2 NFTs, with a distribution inspired by the dreams collected. For example, if there are 15% who dream of stopping the war in the world, 15% of the funds will be used for this cause.</p>



<h2>How do you see the NFT ecosystem in 5 years?</h2>



<p><strong>Jæn</strong>: It&#8217;s complicated, there are a lot of predictions. Everyone gets excited about blockchain gaming but it&#8217;s when everyone is excited about something that you need to take a step back right? I’ve noticed that the game design, scenario, or gameplay parts are often overlooked in the &#8216;<a href="https://nonfungible.com/academy/nft/gamefi-play-to-earn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Play to Earn</a>&#8216; (P2E) games I’ve seen. Players are happy to make money but don&#8217;t say &#8220;I&#8217;m happy playing the game&#8221;.</p>



<p>Some say that art or visual creation will fade with NFTs. I disagree with that, every artist manages to use NFTs in a way so specific to them that it will necessarily give way to something very interesting. I don&#8217;t see a logical explanation why <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/art/the-cryptoart-movement" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crypto-art</a> would go away.</p>



<p>I also think that NFTs will develop into everyday applications, with <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/utility/fixing-event-ticketing-with-nft" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT concert tickets</a> or membership passes for example. By a big adoption, rather a generalization. To return to art, generative art is finding its place but it is especially programmable art that I find incredible. On Async Art, in particular, there is no need to know how to code to make programmable art! For a code newbie like me, it&#8217;s just perfect. If this could be the direction that NFTs are taking in the future, tout would be the dream!</p>



<h2>In your opinion, what is the barrier to NFT &#8220;mass adoption&#8221; by the general public?</h2>



<p><strong>Jæn</strong>: I would say learning how to manage a wallet. Even if today there are custodial solutions that allow you to have a wallet just thanks to a login and a password, this brings some complications. For example, with our drop on Nifty Gateway, we realized that as long as the NFT was held on the platform, it did not really exist. You can&#8217;t interact with it (except with an API but it&#8217;s extremely complicated). It&#8217;s good for a bigger adoption but it has limits.</p>



<p>I don&#8217;t really see how to simplify it, maybe it just takes time for people to learn <a href="https://nonfungible.com/academy/nft/buying-first-nft" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how to set up a crypto wallet</a>?</p>



<h2>Conclusion</h2>



<p>As we progress through our series of interviews with ecosystem players, it becomes so apparent that the future will be rich with innovative ideas and projects.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These will no doubt form the basis for a new digital reality likely to span over the next few decades shaping the world to come across multiple industries.</p>

<h2>Paul, Growth &amp; Community Manager at fxhash</h2>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: Hello Paul and thank you for your time! As part of <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/corporate/nft-heroes-gaspard-broustine-ledger" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our series on the key players in the ecosystem</a>, I wanted to ask you a few questions. Let&#8217;s start with the first one, can you introduce yourself?</p>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: I’m a fxhash community manager and, together with others, am responsible for the platform’s growth. fxhash is a platform for creating and collecting generative art NFTs on the Tezos blockchain. Since launching in 2021, we’ve witnessed an explosion of interest in creating art with code and have given that art a home – we don’t curate the platform, so anyone can release an NFT art project here.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>How did you discover NFTs?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: I originally discovered NFTs because of the Beeple sale, which I think makes me an NFT late bloomer! Afterward, I seemed to read about NFTs everywhere I turned until I finally discovered <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/artblocks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Art Blocks</a>. However, I was instantly priced out of AB works and didn’t want to pay the obscene ETH gas prices, nor could I ignore <a href="https://nonfungible.com/academy/ecosystem/nfts-impact-environment" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the environmental impact of ‘Proof of Work’ blockchains</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>So, while my generative art obsession became stronger, I sought out an environmentally-friendly alternative and discovered <a href="https://tezos.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tezos</a> and the legendary Hic et Nunc art platform (it is now extinct but the community has created its own version called <a href="https://teia.art/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Teia</a>). After that, it was game over – I was full-blown addicted to NFTs.</p>



<h2>Do you think NFT and generative art changed traditional digital art?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Yes, without a doubt. Generative art and NFTs are a powerful combination that is taking digital art to its limits – and even beyond them. Before NFTs, there was no real, immutable, and decentralized way to prove ownership of a digital item. But now, because of NFTs, we can easily confer the same uniqueness physical objects have enjoyed to digitally native things like art.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Generative art NFTs stretch this paradigm even further. An artist’s algorithm can often produce an unlimited quantity of unique iterations, each of them a part of the meta-project with easily identifiable provenance, yet they also exist as singular assets.</p>



<h2>How do you see NFTs in 5 years?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul </strong>: In five years, we will no longer be speaking about NFTs because they’ll be the default standard for asset issuance, ownership, and authenticity. NFTs will be everywhere, likely backing many things we take for granted today, like event tickets and deeds. Since NFTs will back the authenticity of most, if not all transactable objects, we’ll probably drop the whole “NFT” thing. So, art NFTs will just be art.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>What is the biggest barrier to NFT Mass adoption?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Right now, I think it’s the onboarding. There are still a lot of technical terms, it’s super geeky… Look, there’s Gucci making an NFT drop but it looks like they didn’t know how to do it. You still have to create a wallet, which introduces technical difficulties and special knowledge requirements. We’re still in the Wild West days for NFT adoption – it’s going to take tons of education, outreach, and simplifying the user experience before NFTs gain true mass adoption.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Any preferred Art Generative project?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: <a href="https://www.fxhash.xyz/marketplace/generative/2969" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Garden, Monoliths by Zancan</a> is my goal right now. It’s such a beautiful and exceptional work of art, and it’s also hard to believe it’s created with code. Garden, Monoliths (or <em>Gardens</em> for short) also perfectly represents the NFT generative art renaissance happening on Tezos now. Tezos uses 2 million times <em>less</em> energy than Ethereum, making it a truly green blockchain, thus preserving more greenspace for IRL gardens, too.</p>



<h2>What if<strong> </strong>I love Generative art but I don’t know how to code?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Actually, me neither! But what’s great about fxhash is you can see and read the code to understand the artist’s logic and creative process. Everybody can see and comment on the code – and thanks to this transparency, it’s easy to verify an artwork’s originality and also set the artist’s signature in stone on the blockchain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The <a href="https://discord.com/invite/fxhash" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fxhash discord</a> is also a great place to congregate if you want to learn to code &#8211; there are super successful artists who are humble enough to just chill in the support channels and help anyone trying to learn.</p>



<h2>Any future projects?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Not right now. We are fully focused on fxhash because it’s still very early and young and we need to continue building core platform features, even after our release of the full platform.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Our current focus is on empowering everyday collectors to become curators, giving artists even more modularity for dropping new artwork, and further enhancing current marketplace features.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Conclusion</h2>



<p>Fascinating to see how people who call themselves late to the scene are building core ecosystem projects such as fxhash.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The question arises, are they truly late or, more likely, are these recent passionate members of the ecosystem merely joining a growing movement that will continue to expand for decades to come?</p>

<p>We have read-access to the Flow network.<br>We are the <a href="https://explorer.roninchain.com/validators" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">longest-running validator of the Ronin network</a>.</p>



<p>We currently track Ethereum, Ronin, and Flow but Ethereum data has been the only one displayed on the website so far.&nbsp;The good news is: the two other chains will be available shortly but that does mean the current backfilling is currently impacting the market tracker for the time being.</p>

The reward offered on these marketplaces incentivizes wash trading. Therefore, we do not count these sales as legitimate. We look forward to presenting this data when we’ll have the tools to automatically identify the outliers in real-time.</p>

<h2><strong>How the NFT Market reacted to the Ukraine war</strong></h2>

<p>One of the most significant events of this first quarter is the war in Ukraine. This is probably what has marked the biggest brake in the industry as we can see on this Google Trends search chart.</p>



<p>With the media oversaturating on the subject towards the end of the year, it was natural for the interest to drop. Another important factor is the Fed&#8217;s announcements at the beginning of the year regarding the slowdown in &#8220;anti-covid&#8221; financial measures.&nbsp;</p>



<h2><strong>Global NFT performance</strong></h2>

<p>Overall, the indicators are bearish. As we announced in our 2021 annual report, a decrease in NFT sales volume due to the saturation of the collectible market was to be expected. Many projects, such as Profile Picture (PFP) with a 10,000 asset supply have declined sharply to make way for projects with less supply.</p>



<p>However, this drop in sales volume is accompanied by a much smaller drop in the volume of dollars traded (only 5% drop).</p>



<p>Although the number of active wallets is also decreasing, the number of buyers is still higher than the number of sellers which means that the interest in buying NFT is still present.</p>



<p>With nearly $8 billion traded in the first quarter of 2022, the market cannot really be considered to have collapsed. We are observing a stabilization of the NFT market, in line with the last quarter of 2021.</p>



<p>However, two indicators are on the rise:</p>



<ul><li>The number of smart contracts increased by 10.46%, from 1,271 in Q4 2021 to 1,404 in Q1 2022</li><li>The average price of non-fungible tokens&nbsp; increased by 80%, from $587 in Q4 2021 to $1,057 in Q1 2022</li></ul>



<p>The increase in the number of smart contracts means an increase in the number of projects that are created and are active. The builders of web3 are still present, and their number is increasing. The average price of NFTs was driven by sales of &#8220;bluechips&#8221; projects such as <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/boredapeclub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bored Ape Yacht Club</a>, <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/cryptopunks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CryptoPunks</a>, <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/azuki" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Azuki </a>or <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/cyberbrokers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cyberbrokers</a>.</p>

<p>The secondary market represents almost 90% of the value in circulation for approximately 70% of the sales volume.</p>



<p>As a reminder, the secondary market in 2021 represented:</p>



<ul><li>47% of transactions</li><li>82% of the value traded</li></ul>



<p>We observe here a very clear decline in the primary market, which is explained by a (healthy) slowdown in the production of assets on the market. The frenzy of new NFTs seems to have slowed and most of the value remains in the secondary market.</p>



<p>This trend gives the feeling that the secondary market is still trying to “digest” all the NFTs that were issued in the primary market last year. We are in a post-saturation phase of the market, which helps to explain this slowdown.</p>

<h2><strong>NFT Activity by segment</strong></h2>

<p>Several conclusions emerge from these charts:</p>



<ul><li><a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker?segment=collectible&amp;days=7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Collectibles </a>represent a larger share than ever in the NFTs markets with nearly 80% of the total volume traded.&nbsp;</li><li><a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker?segment=game&amp;days=7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blockchain Gaming</a> remains a major segment in the number of sales and active wallets. However, this segment is dominated by Axie Infinity.</li><li>The <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker?segment=metaverse&amp;days=7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Metaverses</a>, although over-hyped, currently represent only a minor part of the overall NFT industry.</li></ul>



<p>However, each segment has its own interpretation. It’s normal to have a high asset supply for video games but a low one for Metaverse.&nbsp; <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker?segment=art&amp;days=7">Art</a> is not intended to present the same liquidity as the Collectibles segment.</p>



<h2><strong>The NFT market is stabilizing</strong></h2>



<p>The great novelty of this quarter is undoubtedly the evolution of profitability in the NFT markets. Making a profit in NFTs in 2022 won’t be as easy as 2021. That said, we can stay optimistic about the future of the NFT industry.</p>



<p>Yes, the asset, USD and active wallet volume decreased compared to the Q4 2021. But compared to the Q1 2021, volume is still very encouraging! Remember that this market was built after the initial coin offering (ICO) period of 2017 and therefore, is very resilient to the crypto-market volatility.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Those who entered the NFT industry in 2021 and hoped that the hyper-growth to continue at the same pace must have some mixed feelings about this industry. However, we truly believe that we’re living the opening of a new chapter. What will it be? Presumably something around the construction of bigger, more ambitious NFT projects and new experiments.</p>

<h2>Gaspard Broustine, NFT Project Manager at Ledger.</h2>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: Hello Gaspard and thank you for your time! As part of <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/corporate/nonfungible-heroes-matty-dclblogger" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our series on the key players in the ecosystem</a>, I wanted to ask you a few questions. Let&#8217;s start with the first one, can you introduce yourself?</p>



<p><strong>Gaspard</strong>: I&#8217;m a collector of NFTs, that&#8217;s how I got into the world of Web3, Crypto and Digital Art. It was in 2019 that I realized, during my readings, it was possible to collect Digital Art.</p>



<p>The certificate of authenticity of an artwork is the most important element in traditional art. We can view original works of art with carbon 14 or thanks to the DNA contained in the canvas. But if there is no certificate of authenticity it can be almost impossible to sell.</p>



<p>The blockchain, by its technology, solves this problem in particular thanks to NFTs&#8230; and when I realized it, I started collecting them.</p>



<h2>How did you get to Ledger and what is your role?</h2>



<p><strong>Gaspard</strong>: When the world of NFTs exploded in the traditional sector, I told myself that I was going to spend my full time in my passion, and so I applied to Ledger.</p>



<p>My mission, these recent months, has been to upgrade all the features of Ledger products for NFTs. The problem we want to solve at Ledger is around the safety of users. In the <a href="https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ledger Live</a> software, it is possible to interact directly with your hardware wallet and since recently, it is especially possible to interact with NFTs.</p>



<p>Either receiving or sending them..it seems like nothing but making everything work on Ledger Live is not always easy: NFTs are the fusion of Web2 and Web3. The images metadata are still hosted on servers (web2).</p>



<p>So we try to make sure that we only depend on one entity to be able to retrieve and display NFT metadata. As much as possible, we want to be able to retrieve as much metadata as possible on our side so that we can be totally independent.</p>



<p>Regarding the sending of NFTs, one of the current concerns is the &#8220;blind signing&#8221; which, as its name suggests, does not say what you sign when you send an NFT. This means that the user can sign just about anything (such as authorizing token spending without the user being aware of it) .</p>



<p>My role as a NFT Project Manager is therefore, on the one hand, to find secure solutions for the display of NFTs in Ledger Live and, on the other hand, to make possible a visible and understandable reading of the outgoing information on the Ledger screen.</p>



<h2>What do you think is the biggest obstacle to the &#8220;mass adoption&#8221; of NFTs by the general public?</h2>



<p><strong>Gaspard</strong>: The biggest difficulty to NFT mass adoption is the ease of use. Especially for Ledger because we are a security solution so it requires additional steps to set up your wallet the first time. It takes time to educate new users or artists on what a blockchain is… as it is a new technology, it is not obvious. However, it is necessary to understand the basic principles before you can use it, even if it is complicated. Cryptography is mathematics, public key/private keys&#8230; The ramp to cryptos and NFTs is therefore a bit rough!</p>



<p>Even if hot wallets like Metamask facilitate access to crypto, they still give only an illusion of control. Indeed, the user is more vulnerable to attacks than a hardware wallet owner like a Ledger.</p>



<p>Another limitation for the adoption of NFTs is, in my opinion, that we are still too much dependent on web2 technologies.</p>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: You mean it would be easier for you to manage <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/opinions/importance-onchain-nft" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">on-chain NFTs</a>?</p>



<p><strong>Gaspard</strong>: Of course! But with the technical limitations of Ethereum, it&#8217;s extremely difficult to have completely on-chain images. Fortunately there are Layer 2s coming.</p>



<h2>How do you see the NFT ecosystem in 5 years?</h2>



<p><strong>Gaspard</strong>: I think art and culture will continue to adopt NFTs massively. Cinema, digital art, brands will also offer NFTs to their customers in the future. I really think that the wallet will be the equivalent of a digital identity in the future. This will first affect art but then many other sectors.</p>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: rather bullish then?</p>



<p><strong>Gaspard</strong>: Completely bullish!</p>

<p>Our colors have changed a lot : We are bold and subtle, dynamic and humble, pioneering and critical about the ecosystem evolution. The new palette is more aligned with our vision and DNA: an elegant blue, minimalistic grey tones and a catchy energetic orange. We deliver reliable analysis and work under radar most of the time but I can guarantee you that you will hear us when it is time to call out the bullshit.</p>



<p>Our new logotype and wordmark is a simplified version of the previous logo with a little twist. Sleek and timeless, this new design will last through the years and stays true to who we are: minimal, structured and efficient. Sometimes less is more.</p>

<p>We refused to limit ourselves and our creativity to four shapes. We are in a vibrant and expanding environment with countless untapped applications. We love this and the freedom that comes with it. We play with these futuristic vibes, with the concept of growth and of data and apply them according to the support and the purpose. </p>



<p><strong>No doubt we will keep the expectations high for the next elements to come!</strong></p>

In a year NonFungible.com has grown from Dan & Zoup to a team of 15 employees. Our visual identity needed to evolve to match. The core idea and team remains unchanged, what once organically happened has become more conscious and precise.

Presenting the New NonFungible.com Identity


<p>More than 2500 people, 150 speakers, 2 full days of conference. In Lisbon, from 4 to 5 April 2022, the Non Fungible Conference (NFC) took place and we participated!</p>



<p>All large-scale events specializing in NFTs have always taken place historically in the US or Asia. But never in Europe. Of course, there have been many meetups. There are also specialized crypto or DeFi conferences. But nothing about NFTs specifically.</p>



<p>Yet Europe is full of talent and leadership in this area. <a href="https://www.sandbox.game/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Sandbox</a>, <a href="https://www.overthereality.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OVR</a>, <a href="https://www.mintbase.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mintbase</a> and even some members of NonFungible.com have been living in Europe and building the Web3 for years.</p>



<p>Here is our feedback on this event which was rich and intense.</p>



<h2>Digital Art and NFTs</h2>

<p>Throughout the event, several exhibitions and artistic events took place. Not only at the venue of the Non-Fungible Conference but also in the surrounding area!</p>



<p>The &#8220;permanent&#8221; exhibition of artists brought together more than 50artists who were able to invest entire rooms. As soon as you entered the NFC, it was possible to quickly see the exhibition in a room with little light.&nbsp;</p>



<p>And in the middle of all these screens, a collective work in support of the victims of the war in Ukraine.</p>

<p>‘Mariupol’ is a dynamic, interactive and layered artwork that brings together collaborations from 38 artists to mark the beginning of another tragic chapter in this continent’s history.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The artwork is a “living” artwork, whose final appearance will depend on its owner. As with other digital artworks on <a href="http://async.art" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Async.art</a>, collectors control the visual state of the image, which can be changed at any time.</p>

<h2>A talk about NFT Wash Trading</h2>

<p>Among these sharing of reflections and feedback from experts, Zoup and I led a workshop on the theme of wash trading. Some market manipulation practices can take place to inflate the price of an asset, faking a marketplace volume or take advantage of a reward system.</p>



<p>Many talks were organized during these two days of conferences. With more than 250 speakers, the topics covered were as rich as they were varied. <a href="https://www.nonfungibleconference.com/talk-details" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Evolution of NFTs in the art world</a>, growth of wearables, how NFTs are revolutionizing the art of collecting, reflection on metaverses&#8230;</p>



<p>For 45 minutes we were able to alternate between explanations from our <a href="https://nonfungible.com/reports/2021/en/special-safe-practices" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT good practice guide</a> and answers to questions to the public. Indeed, many new players want to develop their own NFT marketplace and want to know how to prevent this kind of practice.</p>



<p>While recalling that risk 0 does not exist, it is also worth remembering that wash trading schemes leave an indelible mark on the blockchain. Players operating NFT marketplaces can therefore identify wash traders through these different schemes and start a dialogue with them rather than banishing them at the risk that they will return with other more complex market manipulation schemes.</p>



<p>The most important thing is to determine *why* a wash trading takes place, it can be to receive trading-related rewards as well as pretend that a project has more activity than it seems.</p>



<h2>Non Fungible Conference Side Event: ArtDAO Launch</h2>

<p>During the day, the conferences took place in several rooms&#8230; but events took place in Lisbon! The focus was on Ledger who organized parties in partnership with Playboy (of which there were commercials in the streets) or the degenerate Party party of The Sandbox.</p>



<p>But they weren&#8217;t the only ones. Another side event caught my attention, that of ArtDAO&#8217;s Genesis Launch. The evening took place near the port, in an artistic creation workshop.</p>

<p>Again, several screens were plugged in when I entered the shed that housed the exhibition. In this darkness and in the middle of the flashing screens, this painting on canvas that hung from the ceiling. As a reminder of the importance of reality in the virtual world.</p>



<p>It was also, of course, a moment of relaxation thanks to the DJ and their electro set adapted to the late afternoon atmosphere. External discussions focused on the evolution of the NFT sector while being accompanied by beers and glasses of wine.</p>

<p>The least we can say is that the event was very intense and interesting! We were obviously delighted to be able to welcome you to our stand to answer your questions, but more importantly, we were delighted to have seen how much of a reality the European dynamic around NFTs is.</p>

<p>As we can see, there has been an explosion of NFT activity in 2021. It is interesting to note that compared to previous years, NFTs were kept for less time.</p>



<p>The total value of all NFT transactions (which includes sales and all other transactions such as “breeding”, “minting” and renting) increased from $82,492,916 in 2020 to $17,694,851,721 in 2021; an increase of 21,350% or more than 200x.</p>

<p>Market activity also increased significantly. The total number of active wallets making NFT transactions, including buying, selling, holding or using them in a blockchain application increased from 89,061 in 2020 to more than 2.5 million in 2021 (2,574,302); an increase of 1,822%.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The number of buyers rose from 75,144 in 2020 to 2,301,544 in 2021 (+2,962%) and the number of sellers increased from 31,774 to 1,197,796 (+3,669%).</p>

<p>Throughout this period of rapid growth there were opportunities to capitalize on the speculative nature of the market and make significant profits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over $5.4 billion of total profit was generated when buying or reselling NFTs with 473 wallets generating over $1 million in profits during 2021. However, with less than 2 million active wallets buying or selling an NFT over the year, the market is still yet to reach mass adoption.</p>

<p>Out of bed, on a plane, in a cab, and dropped into a line of NFT enthusiasts waiting to collect their badges, and hopefully one of the 1,000 official <a href="https://www.nft.nyc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT.NYC</a> hats (tokenized via <a href="https://smartseal.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SmartSeal.io</a> and <a href="https://www.nft.kred/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT.Kred</a>). </p>



<p>This was the start of what would turn out to be an exciting and informative <strong>four-day conference</strong> with artists, projects, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders in the NFT space.</p>

<p>The buzz of energy that started in the line for badges continued to flow to each venue and event throughout the course of the week. In an opening dialogue between <strong>Jodee Rich</strong> and <strong>Gary Vee</strong>, Gary presented a realistic and matter-of-fact view on the current state of the market: </p>

<p>While Jodee countered with more idealistic notions that creatives were finally empowered to <strong>own their content</strong> and to directly benefit from it rather than being suppliers of content to larger corporations/organizations. </p>



<p>These two points are not mutually exclusive and examples of both can be found in the enormous gains of <strong>NFT flippers</strong>, and the extraordinary success of artists who enter the NFT market and find a receptive audience of collectors.</p>



<h2><strong>New ideas and collaborations.</strong></h2>

<p>Ideas were shared by Artzy and 3lau about the future of music and how musicians and bands could participate and engage directly with their audience in a way that will be mutually beneficial. <strong>3LAU</strong>’s recently launched NFT platform <a href="https://royal.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Royal</a> looks to turn fans into “investors” and share the success of their favorite artists and musicians.</p>



<p>AI was discussed in intriguing, and somewhat ominous talk : “Machines will be learning from machines” stated <strong>Arif Khan</strong>. The <strong>Alethea AI</strong>, <a href="https://alethea.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Noah’s Ark</a> project is creating historical NFT personas loaded with AI metadata and machine learning to produce interactive “beings” embedded in the NFT. Did somebody say <strong>SkyNet</strong>?</p>

<p><a href="https://superrare.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SuperRare’s</a> Zack Yanger discussed the value of NFTs and how SR <strong>removed the middleman</strong> from the traditional exchanges in the gallery and auction house settings in the “real world.” While Matthew Iles spoke of Sotheby’s entrance in the market and how they support NFT artists with shows such as “Natively Digital” and the <a href="https://metaverse.sothebys.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sothebysverse</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zack emphasized the importance of ongoing, secondary market royalties, and when asking <strong>Sotheby’s</strong> for their stance on royalties, Matthew confirmed that they “…will be giving artists royalties!”. Once more, when Zack asked what percentage, Mr. Iles replied that they “…will let the artist decide<strong>!</strong>”.</p>



<p>Great news for artists!</p>



<h2><strong>Conclusion</strong></h2>



<p>Afterparties, music events, art shows, billboard takeovers… it was a wild week! But the most encouraging takeaway was that this is a new ecosystem creating new markets and new ways for individuals to collect, support, and interact with creators in the <strong>art</strong>, <strong>music</strong>, <strong>gaming</strong>, and <strong>tech verticals</strong>.</p>



<p>We are still early.&nbsp;</p>



<p>There are plenty of opportunities to educate and onboard newcomers. This is a supportive community where the rising tide raises all ships and success is celebrated rather than being a call-to-arms for creative competition and comparison.</p>

<ul><li><strong>Active Wallets</strong>&nbsp;– Number of wallets that have interacted with an NFT Smart Contract, the same<br>person can have several wallets. These active wallets are not solely buyers and sellers but<br>anyone who has played a game or interacted with a project using an NFT. There are most<br>likely more wallets than NFT users/owners, but the trend remains significant.</li><li><strong>Buyers</strong>&nbsp;– Number of wallets that bought at least one NFT during the year.</li><li><strong>Sellers</strong>&nbsp;– Number of wallets that sold at least one NFT during the year.</li><li><strong>USD traded</strong>&nbsp;– Total volume traded in NFTs. This volume includes all sales, but also in-game<br>actions that involve a financial transaction, for example the improvement of an asset through<br>breeding.</li></ul>



<p><br>Q3 of 2021 broke the&nbsp;<strong>$billion</strong>&nbsp;threshold by a long way, with almost&nbsp;<strong>$6 billion</strong>&nbsp;traded on the Ethereum blockchain alone. All indicators continue to show an upwards trend, with the number of wallets in use of both buyers and sellers increasing significantly.</p>



<p>Note: the number of sellers is&nbsp;<strong>growing faster</strong>&nbsp;than the number of buyers, which may suggest<br>that the conversion of ‘new entrants’ becoming ‘NFT traders’ is accelerating.</p>

<p>During this turbulent quarter, the NFTs sector experienced <strong>a huge activity spike</strong> brought by a public that had never heard of it before. These last three months, we have seen the mainstream media place <strong>NFTs on a pedestal</strong>, giving the industry excellent visibility, but also causing a lot of ink to flow; especially in the art sector.</p>



<p>Let us introduce you today to the evolution of the <strong>NFT market for this Q2 2021</strong>. We will return to this bubble phenomenon but also the retention rate of the different sectors, the average price of assets or a top 3 sales for each category.</p>

<h2><strong>GLOBAL ANALYSIS</strong></h2>

<p>Overall, compared to the first quarter, <strong>all indicators are green</strong>.</p>



<p>Whether compared to last year or the previous quarter, more dollars have been traded, the number of buyers and sellers have increased, and the number of active weekly wallets has increased.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As we already said in our 2020 annual report, this trend is part of a <strong>strong growth</strong> for both the NFTs sector and the crypto sector since September 2020.</p>



<p>It is therefore particularly interesting to note that despite what the great media thought, the NFTs sector is absolutely not dead and continues to evolve well.</p>



<h2><strong>NFT Market Q2 2021 TRENDS</strong></h2>

<p>One of the indicators that grabbed our attention was the <strong>distribution of sales</strong> during this second quarter. The arts sector is not the one that has evolved the most over the last three months, but rather the utility sector.</p>



<p>As these NFT use cases are not very widespread, we carefully consider this signal that could become a trend.</p>

<p>This signal on the <strong>utility</strong> NFTs is not reflected in the level of the USD volume generated by sales. The <strong>collectible</strong> segment largely dominates the market in this quarter.</p>



<p>&nbsp;The explosion in USD volume in May was mainly due to the launch of larvalabs&#8217; <strong>Meebits</strong> project. With a primary market volume of $90,763,550 for this quarter, the launch of <strong>Meebits</strong> has given a lot of market&#8217;s misinterpretation.</p>



<p>But even if the end of the quarter in terms of USD volume was lower than at its beginning, this is not the case for its <strong>sales volume which saw a sharp increase.</strong></p>



<h2><strong>Biggest sales</strong></h2>

<p>The biggest on-chain sales of this quarter were won hands down by the art segment, followed by the collectibles segment and then metaverses.</p>



<p>With the various sales of <strong>Christie&#8217;s </strong>and <strong>Sotheby&#8217;s</strong> auction houses, we have ranked these record sales in another &#8220;off-chain&#8221; segment.</p>



<p>This trend is also developing and in the future we will develop the tools to be able to integrate these sales automatically into our analysis and reports.</p>
