
<p>As <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-fungible_token" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFTs</a> (Non Fungible Tokens) gain popularity as a way of owning digital assets and joining tokenized communities, it’s becoming clear that this use of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockchain" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blockchain</a> could drive more than just innovation in technology and ownership structures. There are signs that this new way of creating and collecting art could also drive advances in diversity, equity and inclusion in historically inequitable spaces.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Defining Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The team here at NonFungible is a diverse one. We bring together a variety of cultures, languages, gender and sexual identities, among other groups and statuses. We believe in equity, which means acknowledging our differences personal and historical, including disadvantages. Our team’s composition and how we work with one another prompted this article. So did our desire to foster inclusion of the wide-range of folks who have contributed to the amazing proliferation of NFTs in such a short time. All of us have a lot to offer via NFTs, and NFTs can catalyze the innovation we bring. Yet there is a long way to go in the realm of non-fungible tokens more generally when it comes to <a href="https://diversity.uiowa.edu/resources/dei-definitions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diversity, equity, and inclusion </a>(DEI), especially for disabled artists who create non-fungible tokens to represent themselves and their culture.</p>



<h2>What does DEI mean in the world of non-fungible tokens?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>As another of our authors pointed out in her article on the<a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/utility/the-history-of-nfts-on-ethereum" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> history of NFTs on ethereum</a>, 2021 was a year of representation. NFT projects by women, LGBTQ+ creators, among other marginalized groups. For the realm of NFTs, DEI means ethical representation and supportive platforming for marginalized groups. It’s a framework that counterbalances white, cis-gendered, heterosexual, and white narratives and power structures. And the NFT world, as much as the world we eat and sleep&nbsp; in, needs balance if we’re to avoid making the same mistakes that have excluded the full richness of human experience.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Who benefits from DEI in NFTs and why?</h2>



<p>We all benefit. While folks who want <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesagencycouncil/2022/03/01/gen-z-brands-need-to-prioritize-dei-and-gender-liberation/?sh=2ed636b874ab" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DEI tend to be younger</a>, that seems to be skewing upward as older generations realize <a href="https://hbr.org/2022/03/harnessing-the-power-of-age-diversity" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DEI applies to age</a> as well. At the same time, the youth-oriented NFT market continues to gain coverage and legitimacy in places as unexpected as golf (LINK) and fine wine (LINK) that have been traditionally associated with older, more affluent groups. The culture of disabled artists may be the next field non-fungible tokens will spotlight.</p>



<h2>ARTXV and Disabled Artists&nbsp;</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.artxvnft.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ARTXV</a> is a community that serves neurodiverse NFT artists and celebrates their culture. Neurodiversity covers a broad scope of individual experiences&nbsp; that includes Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more. These conditions are common and natural, yet not so common that it’s easy to create community around them in the real-world. The flexibility of NFTs, their openness to carry the experience of very different individuals and communities, also creates common digital ground. The wide range of neurodiverse experiences can be valued and made visible for the community as well as those outside it.</p>



<p>Visual art speaks emotional truths that words often fail to do, especially&nbsp; in neurodiverse discourses. Seeing is believing and believing can yield understanding. Once visible, disabled experiences are harder to deny. Communities like ARTXV, the NFTs they&#8217;ll soon mint, and the conversations they promote extend beyond a small, often excluded community. When disabled artists can show their art without passing a credential check for a Master of Fine Arts, or for their connections to high-profile galleries, or agents and influencers&#8217; gatherings that require neurotypical tact, boundaries dissolve and possibilities arise for individual expression and community. The art demands of the viewer: “Could you exclude me now?”</p>



<p>Perhaps for disabled artists the flow of inclusion will pour into the real world from their art. Or from able-bodied allies who transfer their appreciation from the NFT gallery back to the person in the wheelchair. Or the young lady flapping her arms happily at the cafe. When disabled folks can build thriving communities online that elevate individual and cultural dignity, both individuals and culture become that much harder to tear down. Part of that individual dignity is financial stability. This is key for Autistic folks in particular as the unemployment rate in that population may be <a href="https://content.iospress.com/articles/work/wor2492">nearly 40%</a> in the United States.</p>



<h2>DEI and the NFT Market</h2>



<p>Can NFTs facilitate DEI practices in the metaverse? We hope so. The metaverse and marginalized groups like Autistic folks have everything to gain from diversity, equity, and inclusion. We encourage you to continue this conversation while the NFT market is young and the ethics that guide it are in flux.</p>



<p>As part of Web3, NFTs can be a lever we use to push and innovate real-world discussions. NFTs, thanks to their horizontal and transparent nature, can give exposure to anyone who wants to build the next web and a better world. So far, the next web looks more diverse and inclusive thanks to NFTs and their creators.</p>

NFT culture: a diverse, equitable and inclusive future?


<p>Club E11even is known for hosting some of the world’s best known artists like 50 Cent, Post Malone, Chainsmokers, Diplo, Tiesto, Doja Cat, Snoop Dog, Travis Scott and Ja Rule. <p><strong>Besancia</strong>: Hello Paul and thank you for your time! As part of <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/corporate/nft-heroes-gaspard-broustine-ledger" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our series on the key players in the ecosystem</a>, I wanted to ask you a few questions. Let&#8217;s start with the first one, can you introduce yourself?</p>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: I’m an fxhash community manager and, together with others, am responsible for the platform’s growth. fxhash is a platform for creating and collecting generative art NFTs on the Tezos blockchain. Since launching in 2021, we’ve witnessed an explosion of interest in creating art with code and have given that art a home – we don’t curate the platform, so anyone can release a NFT art project here.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Besancia</strong>: how did you discover NFTs?</p>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: I originally discovered NFTs because of the Beeple sale, which I think makes me an NFT late bloomer! Afterward, I seemed to read about NFTs everywhere I turned until I finally discovered <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker/artblocks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Art Blocks</a>. However, I was instantly priced out of AB works and didn’t want to pay the obscene ETH gas prices, nor could I ignore the environmental impact of ‘proof of work’ blockchains.&nbsp;</p>



<p>So, while my generative art obsession became stronger, I sought out an environmentally-friendly alternative and discovered <a href="https://tezos.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tezos</a> and the legendary Hic et Nunc art platform (it is now extinct but the community has created its own version called <a href="https://teia.art/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Teia</a>). After that, it was game over – I was full-blown addicted to NFTs.</p>



<h2>Do you think NFT and generative art changed traditional digital art?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Yes, without a doubt. Generative art and NFTs are a powerful combination that are taking digital art to its limits – and even beyond them. Before NFTs, there was no real, immutable, and decentralized way to prove ownership of a digital item. But now, because of NFTs, we can easily confer the same uniqueness physical objects have enjoyed to digitally native things like art.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Generative art NFTs stretch this paradigm even further. An artist’s algorithm can often produce an unlimited quantity of unique iterations, each of them a part of the meta-project with easily identifiable provenance, yet they also exist as singular assets.</p>



<h2>How do you see NFTs in 5 years ?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul </strong>: In five years, we will no longer be speaking about NFTs because they’ll be the default standard for asset issuance, ownership, and authenticity. NFTs will be everywhere, likely backing many things we take for granted today, like event tickets and deeds. Since NFTs will back the authenticity of most, if not all transactable objects, we’ll probably drop the whole “NFT” thing. So, art NFTs will just be art.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>What is the biggest barrier for NFT Mass adoption?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Right now, I think it’s the onboarding. There’s still a lot of technical terms, it’s super geeky… Look, there’s Gucci making an NFT drop but it looks like they didn’t know how to do it. You still have to create a wallet, which introduces technical difficulties and special knowledge requirements. We’re still in the Wild West days for NFT adoption – it’s going to take tons of education, outreach, and simplifying the user experience before NFTs gain true mass adoption.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Any preferred Art Generative project?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Garden, Monoliths by Zancan is my goal right now. It’s such a beautiful and exceptional work of art, and it’s also hard to believe it’s created with code. Garden, Monoliths (or <em>Gardens</em> for short) also perfectly represents the NFT generative art renaissance happening on Tezos now. Tezos uses 2 million times <em>less</em> energy than Ethereum, making it a truly green blockchain, thus preserving more greenspace for IRL gardens, too.</p>



<p>What if<strong> </strong>I love Generative art but I don’t know how to code?</p>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Actually, me neither! But what’s great about fxhash is you can see and read the code to understand the artist’s logic and creative process. Everybody can see and comment on the code – and thanks to this transparency, it’s easy to verify an artwork’s originality and also set the artist’s signature in stone on the blockchain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The <a href="https://discord.com/invite/fxhash" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fxhash discord</a> is also a great place to congregate if you want to learn to code &#8211; there’s super successful artists who are humble enough to just chill in the support channels and help anyone trying to learn.</p>



<h2>Any future projects ?</h2>



<p><strong>Paul</strong>: Not right now. We are fully focused on fxhash because it’s still very early and young and we need to continue building core platform features, even after our release of the full platform.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Our current focus is on empowering everyday collectors to become curators, giving artists even more modularity for dropping new artwork, and further enhancing current marketplace features.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fascinating to see how people who call themselves late to the scene are building core ecosystem projects such as fxhash.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The question arises, are they truly late or, more likely, are these recent passionate members of the ecosystem merely joining a growing movement which will continue to expand for decades to come?</p>
