<p>Bear market, build market, maybe both. This year’s NFT.NYC happened shortly after a severe downturn in the crypto and stock markets that had the mainstream media questioning and in some cases claiming that NFTs were dead. This is not the case, and NFT.NYC was proof positive that the NFT market is going to continue to build, grow, and improve.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>The largest NFT.NYC to date</h2>



<p>This was the largest <a href="https://www.nft.nyc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFT.NYC</a> yet, and it came less than a year after the close of 2021’s conference (in November 2021). Over 15,000 attendees, 1,500 speakers, and 9 venues spread around Times Square and its neighboring blocks. There were 20+ categories for the three days of talks and events focusing on Art, Film, Music, DAOs, Fashion, Brands, and Sports to name a few. A common thread for the talks was building. Brands (Coach, Squarespace, Estée Lauder, The Philadelphia Eagles…) were sharing their experience and ideas on entering the NFT market, and how these ideas can grow and develop over the coming years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>PFP projects discussed adding value to their community through Metaverse activations and collection-specific gaming. And the digital billboards of Times Square were inundated with graphics and videos featuring new and existing projects, artists, collections, and platforms.</p>



<p>These were all positive signs that although we might be in the middle of a bear market, artists, musicians, developers, thought leaders, and global powerhouse brands were continuing to explore next steps in the NFT industry.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>The long and hard way to the NFT conferences</h2>



<p>While large numbers can be impressive for headlines, they can be a logistical nightmare for a conference. If <a href="https://nonfungible.com/news/corporate/our-report-about-nftnyc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2021’s NFT.NYC was difficult to navigate</a> and decide which events and talks one might attend, this year was near impossible. Everyone would have to pick and choose who they would see, and in doing so, decide who they would miss out on.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Marriot Marquis was a very impressive setup and location for the event with the 2nd through 9th floor allocated to NFTNYC operations; booths, lounges, exhibitions, dining, and multiple stages for speakers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then there were side events in addition to all the official conference events! Art shows, after parties, musical performances, and even a secret party at a secret location whose coordinates were only provided to those who were brilliant enough to crack a code and solve a puzzle.</p>

<h2>Spike Lee on stage at NFT.NYC</h2>



<p>One very notable venue and speaker at this year’s conference was Radio City Music Hall, and the one and only Spike Lee.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Granted, there was some small conversation about New York baseball (see the outfit), but there was also a great conversation on intellectual property, ownership, and drive /  grit versus talent. Spike Lee made it clear that there are plenty of talented people in the world, but the ones that stand out are those who “&#8230;put in the work, learn their craft, and do it!” </p>



<p>He saw how NFTs were a new medium and tool to be used for creatives and those looking to get into film. The ability to self fund a film with an NFT collection really stood out, as he stated that funding is one of the most difficult things to accomplish when starting out as a filmmaker.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As an added bonus Spike Lee also shared a wonderful story about his memories from his first NY Knicks game at Madison Square Garden.</p>

<h2>NFTs are not dead</h2>



<p>NFTs are not dead, there are many brands and artists who haven’t even begun thinking about how they can utilize this new medium and capabilities for their products and creations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Maybe it’s a good thing that the hype has slowed, that the over speculative nature of flippers and money markets have cooled down? There are certainly many opportunities to be had in Web3 and from the looks of things we will continue to grow, build, and improve.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Bear market? Build market?</p>



<p>Both.</p>


We went to the 4th edition of the NFT.NYC which took place in New York from June 20 to 23, 2022. Here are our impressions of the biggest NFT.NYC to date!

Our NFT.NYC 2022 Report


<p>Sex workers face rough conditions in their trade. Platforms take a large percentage of their earnings. Wide-spread, legalized institutional discrimination also interferes with their ability to earn a living. As a result, sex workers have turned to crypto as a safe, reliable form of payment. </p>



<p>And while there is a significant learning curve involved, what they learn transfers well to non-fungible tokens. Through NFTs, sex workers can sell their wares in the form of personalized videos, images, and physical objects. Sex worker-friendly projects have already proliferated, as we&#8217;ll soon see. Assume all links in this article may not be safe for work.</p>



<h2>Sex Work: Pumping Innovation Onward</h2>



<p>The United States military invented the internet, but porn keeps the innovation pounding forward. Internet cash transactions became common in order for individuals to purchase content remotely and with (some) anonymity and privacy. The demand for streaming video led to many efforts that increased bandwidth. And teledildonics, well, it is what it sounds like. So it&#8217;s no surprise that the sex industry has begun to play with crypto and NFTs.&nbsp;</p>



<h3>From FOSTA and SESTA to PornHub and OnlyFans</h3>



<p>The <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/4/13/17172762/fosta-sesta-backpage-230-internet-freedom" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act</a> (FOSTA) and the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) were signed into law in 2019 by President Trump. Their stated purpose? To fight sex trafficking. Both acts hold third-parties responsible for posting ads for prostitution, legal or otherwise. In effect, they ended personal advertisements on Backpage and Craiglists. </p>



<p>The same laws, again deployed as a sword rather than a shield, led <a href="https://decrypt.co/51478/pornhub-now-accepting-crypto-only" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PornHub to begin accepting crypto</a> as the only source of payment in December of 2020. Around this time, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/dec/10/pornhub-mastercard-visa-rape-child-abuse-images" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Visa and Mastercard pulled support from Pornhub</a> after a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opinion/sunday/pornhub-rape-trafficking.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York Times</a> article reported non-consenual, underage sexual content on the website. Yet these companies refused to acknowledge the damage their policies would do to legitimate entertainers posting consensual content in order to earn a living.</p>



<p>The folks at OnlyFans have experienced similar issues as <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/4avpe3/ann-wagner-fosta-onlyfans-csam-doj-letter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the sword of FOSTA and SESTA looms over</a> their platform as well. While credit cards remain an accepted form of payment there, and crypto&#8217;s yet-to-be accepted, the sword could drop at any time. Such is life in the sex industry when the slow feet and puritanical minds of the law catch up. Perhaps professionals on OnlyFans have reason to hope crypto will soon be accepted. In February of 2022, entertainers on the platform could begin using NFTs hosted on Ethereum as profile pictures. Thank you, Twitter, for inspiring the porn world.</p>



<h3>Sex Workers’ Financial and Physical Safety</h3>



<p>What about individual sex workers?&nbsp;</p>



<p>Banks, credit card companies, and payment vendors hide behind FOSTA and SESTA to discriminate against human beings using their own bodies as a means to pay their bills. While FOSTA and SESTA aimed to target traffickers and protect innocents, institutions use the law to censor and disenfranchise. Nevermind sex workers&#8217; First Amendment rights to express themselves freely and without doing harm. In this hostile legal environment, crypto is a lifeline for sex workers.</p>



<h4>Physical</h4>



<p>Strictures imposed by traditional payment vendors can result in real-life crises for sex professionals. For example, if a gentleman of the evening finds his bank account has been closed suddenly due to institutional paranoia about adults getting paid for sex, then he may less carefully vet in-person clients. Desperation could turn dangerous fast because the sex worker can expect little support from law enforcement or other community resources.</p>



<h4>Financial</h4>



<p>Unlike traditional institutions, crypto prevents chargebacks. Sometimes a client will chargeback a transaction months later and the sex worker can do nothing about it. To say this is a power imbalance in the workplace would be an understatement. Imagine your boss at the Orange Store deciding &#8220;Nah, I don&#8217;t want to pay that guy&#8221; months after you received your paycheck for flogging laptops to yuppies. You would be stuck with the bill when the boss initiates the chargeback. Chargebacks aren&#8217;t possible via crypto, and that includes the sale of non-fungible tokens.</p>



<p>In 2016, Vice reported that traditional platforms that act as middlemen for <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/nz7b4k/how-sex-workers-get-paid" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sex professionals routinely take 10 to 14% cut</a>. <a href="https://theconversation.com/sex-work-part-of-the-online-gig-economy-is-a-lifeline-for-marginalized-workers-160238" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Content marketplaces take 30% commission or more</a>. Squeezed from all sides, it only makes sense for sex workers to explore a new financial model that favors individual liberty. And has an employer or bank ever paid you royalties? Well, me either. This is another reason for sex workers to dig into NFTs after learning the crypto ropes.</p>



<h2>Give the People What They Want</h2>



<p>Even if the socks have already been worn. When a performer creates a custom video, image, or other content for a client, they’ll only get paid for it once if they accept compensation via, say, credit card. Or crumpled bills in a back alley. What’s worse, they&#8217;ll receive zero royalties when the content is re-sold, repackaged, and reuploaded to another platform. </p>



<p>Enter marketplaces like <a href="https://spankchain.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SpankChain</a> and <a href="https://nasfty.io" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASFTY</a>. The same video of a performer wearing a George W. Bush mask and little else will always be traceable back to the originating performer-creator thanks to the public ledger that is the blockchain. And if royalties are written into the smart contract of the NFT, then the performer will receive royalties when the NFT is resold. </p>



<h3>SpankChain</h3>

<p>SpankChain aims to deliver a decentralized adult social network built on Ethereum that resolves the issues sex workers face. Experts in crypto, software engineering, and the sex industry have built the product. The team and the infrastructure they&#8217;ve built differentiate SpankChain from less authentic projects.</p>



<p>Performers benefit from low transaction fees and the fact that SpankPay, one of SpankChain&#8217;s products, is USD friendly. In addition to live video, a cut of ads, and items sold on the content marketplace, performers can receive payment if they participate in Spank Pop Shots. <a href="https://www.spankpopshots.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pop Shots</a> (NSFW) are NFTs sold in a pack of 4. Each NFT features top models and is one-of-a-kind with a distinct serial number. Your humble author explored what sort of performers are accepted for Pop Shots. The Google Form didn&#8217;t inquire as to my experience, gender, age, or sexuality, yet content displayed on the site and <a href="https://opensea.io/collection/spank-pop-shots" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Opensea</a> indicate that the audience for these NFT packs is strictly heterosexual men.</p>



<h3>NASFTY</h3>



<p><a href="https://nasfty.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASFTY</a> provides an Ethereum-based content marketplace for adult entertainers. There are plenty of cryptopunks-inspired images. And there&#8217;s also more conventional pornographic content. As on SpankChain, most of the content aims for the male heterosexual audience, though we admit in both cases there could be a trend toward a more diverse range of creators. All a creator needs to begin on NASFTY is own a MetaMask wallet. The creator will then complete age verification and set up their profile on the website.</p>



<h2>The Porn Future is Crypto-NFT</h2>



<p>Crypto and NFT solve many problems in the adult industry. From legal and institutional discrimination, to imbalances on platforms that skew away from individual performers and their labor, crypto and NFTs can reset the playing field. And more equity might lead to more innovation, an area in which the porn industry has stagnated in recent years.</p>

<p>NFT aggregators gather listings from multiple marketplaces and platforms in one place. This provides buyers with a simplified interface to compare prices and acquire NFTs from different sources. Relevant tools as the market becomes more and more fragmented (OpenSea, LooksRare, X2Y2, NFTX).&nbsp;</p>



<p>We will briefly present the 3 main aggregators: Genie.xyz, Gem.xyz and Blur.io.</p>



<h2>Genie.xyz</h2>



<p>Launched in November 2021, <a href="https://www.genie.xyz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Genie</a> allows NFT collectors to purchase up to 60 NFTs at a time on multiple marketplaces in a single transaction. Depending on the size of the transaction, buyers can potentially save hundreds of dollars in gas fees compared to purchasing each NFT individually.</p>



<p>Genie displays listings from all major marketplaces: OpenSea, LooksRare, X2Y2, NFT20 and NFTX. In fact, Genie aggregates all the NFTs listed on these marketplaces. If an NFT collection is not indexed, users can enter the collection&#8217;s contract address in the search bar. Genie will take approximately 1-2 minutes to index the collection.</p>

<p>Genie allows you to create a shopping list and purchase NFTs in batches. Collectors can quickly purchase multiple NFTs at the same time, a practice known as &#8220;sweeping the floor&#8221;. The Genie team recommends that users purchase a maximum of 20 NFTs in a single swap.</p>

<p>Genie also allows sellers to maximize the exposure of their listings by listing on both OpenSea and LooksRare at the same time.</p>

<p>On June 21, 2022, <a href="https://uniswap.org/blog/genie" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Uniswap Labs announced that it acquired the aggregator Genie</a>.:</p>



<p><em>«&nbsp;We see NFTs as another format for value in the growing digital economy—not a separate ecosystem from ERC20s, and they’re already an important gateway to web3.&nbsp;»</em></p>



<p>Decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap plans to add a new tab dedicated to NFTs on its main site later this year. DEX will also integrate NFTs into its developers&#8217; APIs and widgets.</p>



<p>In order to share some of the value with Genie&#8217;s long-time users, Uniswap will perform an airdrop in stablecoin USDC. People who have used Genie at least twice before April 15, 2022 will be eligible.</p>



<h2>Gem.xyz</h2>



<p>It&#8217;s hard to talk about an aggregator without mentioning <a href="https://www.gem.xyz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gem.xyz</a>. They are building a NFT aggregator « giving you A to XYZ access to the entire NFT market. ». The aggregator allows you to:</p>



<ul><li>Buy multiple NFTs in a single transaction</li><li>Sweep the collection floor</li><li>Pay with any token (or multiple ones)</li><li>save tons gas compared to buying on the marketplaces directly</li></ul>



<p>Loopifyyy, creator of <a href="https://www.treeverse.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Treeverse</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/Loopifyyy/status/1518622884805152770" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">explained on Twitter</a> the difference between Genie and Gem:</p>



<p><em>«&nbsp;The difference between gem and genie is actually miniscule if you think about it and now that opensea will most likely ruin some features (like blocking out looksRare or something) …</em></p>



<p>At the end of April, OpenSea acquired Gem in order to strengthen its position and offer new features. Devin Finzer, co-founder and CEO of OpenSea, said:</p>



<p><em>«&nbsp;OpenSea has acquired Gem to invest in pro experience. As the NFT community grows, we’ve recognized a need to better serve more experienced, pro users, and offer more flexibility and choice to people at every level of experience.&nbsp;»</em></p>



<p>Gem will continue to operate as an independent company while developing its platform and adding more features, and then some of these features will be gradually integrated into OpenSea.</p>



<h2>Blur.io</h2>



<p><a href="https://blur.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blur</a> is an NFT marketplace for pro traders. Their marketplace empowers traders with real-time liquidity across multiple marketplaces, live data feeds, and comprehensive analytics. Users can execute orders and bulk orders.</p>



<p>According to Blur, <a href="https://mirror.xyz/blurdao.eth/4V0dY_-ob5rBxl664deMASnH2wRsgcrGS20lpdurBa0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">other NFT tools are very often focused on retail traders</a> and neglect the needs of professional traders. </p>



<p>&#8220;Our mission is to solve these problems and bring the NFT space to an institutional level while increasing decentralization.&#8221;</p>



<p>By March 28, Blur had raised $11 million in a seed funding round led by Paradigm. According to Blur, the round also saw participation from Egirl Capital, Keyboard Monkey, Ledgerstatus, 0xmaki, Santiago Santos, Zeneca, Deeze, and Andy (Fractional).</p>



<p>After the acquisitions of Gem by OpenSea and Genie by Uniswap, the Blur platform now stands out for its independence.</p>



<h2>An indispensable tool for advanced trader</h2>



<p>The NFT marketplace aggregator tools haven’t been around for very long:Gem and Genie were both launched in January 2022. Despite this,these new players quickly became successful.</p>



<p>With the fragmentation of the markets after the launch of the new platforms <a href="https://looksrare.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LooksRare</a>, <a href="https://x2y2.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X2Y2</a>, and many others, there quickly became a need for a service targeted towards advanced collectors looking for an easier way to make bulk purchases. These tools quickly became indispensable for the advanced collector and the industry leaders quickly understood this by acquiring the two main players.</p>



<p>Nifty Gateway has recently moved towards aggregating other marketplaces and Rarible has started to do the same. We will also see how new players such as Blur, which claims to be a tool for professionals, is able to make a place for itself in the sun.</p>
